In 1985, BR made its first trials in dedicating traction to specific traffic flows. A dozen Type 2s in the best condition were renumbered in to a special Class 25/9 sub-class and re-allocated to Carlisle, initially for the movement of rock salt. Tamworth Castle was one of those selected, retaining its distinctive ‘Ice Cream Van’ garb. Fitted with miniature three-part snowploughs.
