Railfreight Distribution 'European' Class 47s - SOLD OUT

Untitled Document

A REVISED COLOUR SCHEME was introduced in 1993. The fresh coat of paint was prompted by expansion of the Railfreight Distribution network into Europe with the opening of the Channel Tunnel. The blue roofs were copied from the then new ‘general user’ Class 92s whilst the bodyside legend had been tested on a Class 90. It did not meet with widespread approval - the designer of the original sub-sector livery describing it as a ‘complete bastardisation’ and the additional of lettering as ‘a lack of confidence in the brand’. Nevertheless, it was eventually applied to 49 Class 47s.

Tinsley TMD continued its good work and was responsible for the vast majority of the repaints as well as undertaking the fitting of the ‘Green Spot’ multiple working system. The first locomotives were utilised in pairs on the Connectrail Channel Tunnel feeder services whilst the Class 92s were still undergoing their protracted approval process. Double-heading was also the name of the game on the famous Rover ‘cube’ car parts train that ran between Swindon and Longbridge.

No. 47555 (Item V2109) is probably best remembered as a passenger machine but the electric heat fitted Class 47/4 was transferred to freight work in 1995. Arriving at Tinsley in deplorable condition it was given the ‘full treatment’ by the depot’s painting team. ‘The Spirit’ quickly became a favourite at open days and special events, always turning up in immaculate condition. Largely remaining in original condition, the loco kept its bufferbeam fairings but had its Spanner boiler flue plated over and water tanks removed leaving just the battery boxes between the bogies.

The un-numbered and un-named, locomotive (Item V2110) could be said to represents the definitive RfD Class 47. Again, an ideal candidate for personalisation, it displays the final and most common details in this livery. Cabs have been ‘cut-away’, a long-range fuel tank fitted and small Channel Tunnel logos added under the driver’s window. A pair of these would be stunning on a long Connectrail train. A free pack of rub-on number transfers and selection of nameplates are supplied. Remember, we can always apply these for you for a small charge.
