‘Superliner Superpower’ D6547 & D6554

Two BRCW Type 3s in early condition, with exhaust silencers, in BR green with small yellow warning panels applied on their front ends.

THE FIRST VISIBLE changes to the ‘Cromptons’ came in the summer of 1962 when D6530 was treated to small yellow warning panels to aid visibility to track workers. This first experiment was a non-stand application (with rounded corners) but the yellow paint gradually spread across the fleet the locos were stopped for attention. This combination of mid-build locos displays the most common form of small panel before the whole front end was so treated, correct for the mid/late-1960s period.

Alongside their more mundane duties, the Type 3s were also rostered to work petroleum trains from the large Esso oil refinery at Fawley (Hampshire). They were again paired-up on the 2,000-ton ‘Superliner’ service to the West Midlands, once the heaviest freight train on British Railways. Can you resist recreating this action in ‘OO’ gauge?
